This case study addresses the possibilities and constraints surrounding research considered high risk. Drawing on personal experience of conducting ethnographic fieldwork on Mexican organized crime, the author discusses how, even though generally taken to be near impossible, such research can be feasible under certain circumstances. It is essential to balance an inherent tension between controlling risks and allowing for a necessary degree of methodological flexibility
