| Summary |
NBCI is the largest, most technologically advanced maximum security prison built as of 2007. The designers of this massive, mega prison have not adopted the severe isolation approach to confinement that is typical of most existing supermax prisons with inmates housed in their cells 23 hours a day. Instead, at NBCI inmates move about the facility at will, to gather in the dining hall for meals, participate in classroom instruction, and assemble for other services and activities. The design and construction of the facility is highlighted. NBCI was built as an inverted fortress with a multilayer perimeter so that inmates can't get out. The walls of the modular cells are super strong, made with superdense concrete and reinforced steel bars. The latest in engineering accounts for the improved security features, including remote control cameras, secret control rooms, and a five-story control tower that can control the flush of toilets so inmates cannot dispose of contraband.
