Summary Succinct and lively, Kinds of Peace gives a vivid picture of a dramatic but painful period of Maori history. It is a major contribution to our understanding of the Maori in the years after the wars and fills a substantial gap in nineteenth-century New Zealand history
Sir Keith Sinclair's first book studied the origins of the Anglo-Maori Wars of the 186Os; now, many years later, he writes on the aftermath of those wars for the Maori people. This is a book about large numbers of Maori, often formidable personalities, most of whom have not been previously mentioned in books of New Zealand history. It is also about the political and cultural reactions of Maori to the impact of European settlement and the warfare that followed; these included religion and prophecy, the King movement, Maori committees, Maori entry into the parliamentary system, and the Hawke's Bay Repudiation movement. Sinclair has made extensive use of nineteenth-century Maori letters, many translated for the first time, which convey with directness and intimacy a sense of individual lives and particular characters. Tawhiao, Te Whiti, Tohu, Te Wheoro, Takiora Dalton, Henare Matua, Paora Tuhaere, and many others speak in these pages
