Summary Metabolism of Brain Peptides discusses neuropeptide metabolism in light of recent research. It describes the processing mechanisms in the production of biologically active peptides. It details distribution of the variety of neuropeptides in the brain and comprehensively reviews the effects of these neuropeptides on behavioral and physiological functions. The book also examines termination mechanisms for the biological activities of neuropeptides in light of recent knowledge of their distribution, their receptors and their possible inactivation enzymes in various functional regions of the brain and at the blood-brain barrier

Notes Gerard O'Cuinn received his B. Sc. in Biochemistry from the National University of Ireland at University College Dublin. He undertook a Ph. D. research program at the Institute of Biochemistry, Glasgow University where he also served as Junior Lecturer in Biochemistry (1968-71). Having obtained his Ph. D. (1971) he took up a Visiting Investigatorship at the Institute of Microbiology, Rutgers University (1971-72). On returning to Ireland he held a Medical Research Council of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Department of Biochemistry, University College, Galway (1972-75). He was appointed Lecturer in Biochemistry at the Regional Technical College, Galway in 1975 and since 1980 he has held the position of Head of Department of Life Sciences at the college. He has held grants from the Medical Research Council of Ireland, the Health Research Board (Dublin), Eolas and Forbairt (the National Research and Technology agencies) and from the Dairy Levy Fund. He is the author of over fifty publications on peptide metabolism and has acted as referee for many journals. His research interests center on the peptidolytic systems of brain tissue and of lactic acid bacteria
