Motion and document -- sequence and time : Eadweard Muybridge and contemporary American photography |
Summary |
Muybridge's own photograph of himself perched precariously on top of Contemplation Rock was used as proof of his insanity at his trial for the murder of his wife's lover. He was acquitted. Apart from this homicidal outburst, which precipitated a brief interlude of landscape photography in Latin America, Muybridge is most famous for his pioneering study of animal and human locomotion. In the 1870s and 80s, he made some 20,000 images of moving animals and birds, men and women |
