Summary |
Project Azorian was the CIA's audacious attempt to recover the wreck of the Soviet ballistic missile submarine 'K-129'. From its loss in March 1968 until the summer of 1974 the Soviet's were ignorant of the US Navy's successful mission to locate and photograph the wreck, and that the CIA was preparing the largest salvage attempt in history. At the height of the Cold War, K-129 offered the US a cornucopia of unique intelligence targets, ranging from an all-important opportunity to study Soviet nuclear weapons technology, to the chance to break into Soviet cryptographic systems. This massive effort was one of the longest and most expensive covert operations in CIA history. Azorian: The Raising of the K-129 includes never before seen photography and film of the wreck taken during the 1974 mission, and is based upon contemporaneous documents, providing the first factual and documented accounting of this unique mission outside the confines of US intelligence agencies.
