Summary |
"Australia is running out of water. For the past 13 years, a record-breaking drought has bleached once-productive farmland and prompted cities and towns to ban all nonessential water use. The ground zero of the drought is Melbourne, a booming city of 4 million. Skyrocketing growth mixed with 20 percent lower rainfall has emptied reservoirs. Scientists predict average rainfall could drop by another 20 percent in the next 50 years, making Melbourne's 300 million gallons-a-day water requirement a threat to its survival. Faced with the grim possibility that the drought may never end, the city is turning to the Island Continent's only unlimited water source - the ocean. On a pristine beach two hours south of Melbourne, 3,500 workers are building a $3.5 billion desalination plant. The plant will be sixth-largest on Earth, but also its highest tech. Engineers are attempting to use an innovative technique to produce cleaner water more efficiently than ever before. With undersea tunnels, 29 buildings and 52 miles of pipelines, it's also one of the largest construction sites in the country. With the project less than a year from completion, Build It Bigger is there to see how this engineering marvel is built and learn how it may revolutionize how cities worldwide get their water.
