Summary |
The media and society have created an unrealistic standard of beauty that forces people to believe they need to look a certain way to be beautiful. From the neighborhood aunties to television commercials, everyone is constantly suggesting ways a dark-skinned person can become fairer or otherwise "beautiful." A guy below six feet tall is persistently advised to follow a certain diet and exercise regime that would make him taller, aka "desirable." As a result, people feel insecure in their own skin, fall into the trap of unhealthy comparisons from an early age, and have a difficult time accepting themselves. To address such harmful practices, "AmaderSkin" started its journey back in July of 2020, with the goal of reducing body shaming and providing empathy for the victims of body shaming through the social media platform Instagram, in Bangladesh. On their Instagram page, people are welcomed to share their real-life struggles of getting bullied for their appearance, and how it has taken a toll on their mental health, as well as how they have dealt with body image issues. Each story on this page is posted with a unique illustration that reflects the deeply ingrained scars that remain with the victims. All the storytellers who share their personal experiences, and the illustrators who bring life to these stories through their artwork, work as real-life superheroes by inspiring the younger generation to be more accepting and less judgmental towards themselves and others. This case focuses on body shaming in Bangladesh and other parts of South Asia and addresses this alarming social problem |
