Summary In this case study, I discuss my research design for my master's thesis on modern witchcraft and shamanism. My focus is magick, but as magick cannot be measured or proven, I use the Thomas Theorem to guide my data collection. After sifting through the various research techniques, I decided on both covert, or hidden, and overt, full member field notes, because I am a full member in the community of magickal practitioners; in some cases, people are aware of my research, and in other cases, they are not. These field notes are combined with semi-structured interviews, both of which are qualitative data collection techniques. My research method has a strong anti-positivist bend, and I incorporate Max Weber's verstehen into my design. From this case study, students can learn about these techniques of qualitative data collection, and the ethical and reflexive considerations of the qualitative research design
