Several studies suggest that lesbians and gay men suffer disproportionately from loneliness and isolation as they age. There is also evidence that group or network membership has positive benefits and may serve to reduce isolation and depression. Jill Wilkens' research explored the issue of loneliness and isolation in older lesbians, using a preliminary focus group followed by in-depth interviews to elicit the subjective experience of loneliness and isolation of 10 older lesbians attending an over-55s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) social group at a centre located in an industrial city in West Yorkshire
