Examples of successful female leaders in academia are important in encouraging women to pursue leadership positions. This case specifically focuses on the challenges an Appalachian woman experienced while advancing to academic leadership. Through her story, the case illustrates the personal challenges and successes women of the Appalachian community may experience in advancing into leadership roles, and includes geographic and demographic information specific to Appalachia. The barriers women experience include the following: 1. Lack of female role models in leadership positions, 2. Gender and culture-based stereotypes and perceptions, and 3. Lack of mentors and networking opportunities.
