Summary |
For the first time in a century, China is opening up to the world. This new six-part series gains unprecedented access into a most enigmatic country, to reveal a land of astonishing complexity. High definition cameras capture unique images of mysterious creatures and diverse human communities that live in China's varied landscapes. The glittering peaks of the Himalayas - the world's highest mountain range - tower over the desolate Tibetan plateau. Deserts range from searingly hot to mind-numblingly cold. Rivers roar through steep-sided gorges and cascade down forested waterfalls. Flocks of cranes migrate along a coastline studded with bustling high-tech cities. Steaming jungles harbour wild elephants, colourful birds and strange tropical flowers. In the final episode Tides of Change we journey along the 14,500 kilometre coastline of China which harbours 5,000 years of history. We travel from Shanghai, China's financial capital, to traditional seaweed-thatched villages. We meet the Keija tea growers of Fujian Province's granite mountains, and delve deep into Hong Kong's deep-water harbour - China's foremost bird sanctuary and the home of the world's last remaining White Dolphins. And we sail across the glittering South China sea, studded with islands and remote coral reefs, and stop off at the tropical paradise island of Hainan where macaque monkeys are protected as an endangered species. In this rapidly evolving modern China, so many elements of its ancient culture and wildlife still remain, making it a rich and varied country beyond imagination. But how will it negotiate its future?Journey through this breathtaking place, from the Himalayas to the barren steppe, the sub-arctic to the tropical islands and discover the cultural diversity of China and the mysterious, beautiful, wild and rare creatures which live there.PRODUCTION DETAILS:A BBC Production |
