Summary Chunky Move has been a giant on the Australian contemporary dance landscape since 1995. This film tracks the 16-year history of this seminal Melbourne-based dance company through the eyes of its founder, and outgoing Artistic Director, Gideon Obarzanek. The program follows Obarzanek and takes a behind-the-scenes look at the preparations of two major new works, Connected and Faker. Connected teams five dancers with a suspended kinetic sculpture by Californian artist Reuben Margolin. Like past Chunky Move performances Glow and Mortal Engine, Connected is a visually unique work that marries dance and technology. In Connected the dancers are seen building their performance at the same time as they construct a large wave like kinetic sculpture which attaches to their bodies with multiple strings. Faker by comparison is a self reflective solo work performed by Obarzanek himself. His first performance in 15 years, it's also the first solo work he has ever choreographed. Inspired by a real workshop that Obarzanek had with a young female dancer, Faker is essentially a show about a show that never happened. It's a work that explores doubt, tension, exploitation, notions of expertise and the failed expectations of the choreographic process. It's a compelling departing gesture from a man who has premiered over 25 new dance productions, and who has nurtured Chunky Move to become one of Australia's most successful contemporary dance exports.
