Summary "This book examines the practices of a number of internationally linked businesses, and asks to what extend these businesses have aided the economic growth and helped to reduce the poverty of developing areas. Each case-study is embedded in historical accounts that review the unique set of prospects and difficulties of each developing area. The book looks at both instructive examples and missed opportunities, cases in which these firms have added to the economic value of developing areas and cases with much more ambiguous outcomes. The book argues that whether international firms have a positive impact on these developing areas depends on the degree to which businesses view their operations as occasions to develop their assets over time or rather to minimize expenses." -- BOOK JACKET
