SAGE Research Methods. Cases
|
Summary |
This case explores issues around insideroutsider positionality using the example of research project about cross-border mobilities and identifications, conducted in six European countries. I focus on my experience of non-Italian interviewer enquiring Italian respondents about their experiences of mobility. Researchers often analyze pros and cons of insider and outsider perspective in qualitative interviewing. Instead, I discuss how during the qualitative interviews, the dynamics of intervieweeinterviewer relations shifted between insider and outsider positions. While my ethnicity positioned me outside of studied group, gender, age and mobility experiences, among others, operated in more complex ways. This case provides material useful for researchers working in cross-national qualitative research contexts |
