Series Family footsteps
Summary "Susila Naidu travels in the footsteps of her family's past and confronts the issues close to her heart. Susila is thrown into the world of astrology and match-making. Indian-style. Susila Naidu is a youth worker in country Victoria. Born to an Indian father and an Australian mother, 34-year-old Susila says she has always felt like a "square peg in a round hole". Susila arrives in New Delhi. The temperature is a sweltering 45 degrees; the population a staggering 20 million. Susila gasps at roads choking with traffic, and shrieks at daredevil drivers who barely slow down for pedestrians, cars or cows. It is chaos and a far cry from the quiet life she lives in Ballarat. Susila finally arrives at the home of Nandita - her mentor, who lives in a small middle class apartment in South Delhi with her husband Prakash and their six-year-old daughter Aroushie. Nandita is also 34 and makes her living as an astrologer, specialising in arranged marriages. India is vibrant with colour, spirituality and music, and it's the music that provides Susila with an opportunity to connect with the culture. Susila meets Laili, a friend of Nandita's and one of India's most famous performers of traditional songs. After learning of Susila's gospel singing talent, it's not long before Laili is teaching Susila the art of traditional Hindu singing. Suffering heat exhaustion and an all-consuming home-sickness, Susila ponders whether she will ever feel at home anywhere. Nandita and Susila leave the heat and bustle of Delhi for a few days and attend a pre-wedding celebration." from website
