Summary This week on Talking Heads, Peter Thompson chats with footy and fishing afficionado Rex Hunt. A former policeman and Victorian Football League (VFL) player, these days he is a highly successful businessman, passionate environmentalist and media personality. On Talking Heads, Rex Hunt proves that being told you'll never amount to anything can be beneficial. Bullied at school and dismissed by teachers, Rex set out to show he could in fact be successful pursuing his passions of fishing and football. A stream of TV shows, radio programs, a cafe and products from fishing rods to board games have made him very rich indeed."I had struggled as a kid. I had a huge inferiority complex because I believed I was no good, all caused by people, teachers and bullies, telling me exactly that."My headmaster said, "What do you want to do?" I said, "I want to do something in fishing and I want to be a football broadcaster, Sir". He said, "You'll never make a living out of fishing and football".Despite describing his high school career as "starting slowly, then completely slackening off", Rex eventually found the self-confidence that has served him so well. A sudden growth spurt saw his talent for Australian Rules football explode. His first team, Richmond, won the VFL premiership in 1969 and 1973. He later played for Geelong and St Kilda. This lead him to his ultimate goal, broadcasting."I couldn't be sure of an entree into football broadcasting unless I had performed at an elite level that people would respect. I needed credentials and I was convinced that meant playing footy at top level."Rex's blend of brilliance and bluster has also brought him global fame as a fisherman. His on-screen fish kissing has become instantly recognisable. 'Rex Hunt's Fishing Adventures' has been broadcast in 158 countries.PRODUCTION DETAILS:Produced by ABC TV.
