Summary This case study tracks my PhD research study on dignity management in hospice care using the grounded theory approach. It aims to assist potential users in applying grounded theory in hospice settings. In this case, first, I explained the context of my study and provided an overview of the study. I then described how the study was moved along throughout my 4-year doctoral studies. In section "Research Design," I introduced three types of grounded theory methods and described how my doctoral study was developed based on the theoretical framework of symbolic interactionism and the Straussian grounded theory approach. Fieldwork of the study, including sampling, data collection, and data analysis, was elaborated with specific examples. Findings of the study were then explained. In addition, I provided readers with insights into methodological challenges that a student researcher might encounter when conducting grounded theory studies, practical issues involved in conducting research with terminally ill patients, and practical lessons and useful skills I have learned from my experience. I also talked about language and cultural barriers I have encountered as an international PhD student researcher
