Wallace engages in subversive readings of eighteenth and nineteenth-century Pacific voyage journals (Cook in Hawaii and a Russian expedition to the Marquesas), reassesses Gauguin's treatment of female figures, and discusses homosexuality and Samoan male-to-female transgenderism.
