Summary Foreshadowing the current debates regarding same-sex marriage, A Union in Wait recounts the struggle of Susan Parker and Wendy Scott to have their union recognized and the controversy that divided a community. Parker and Scott were members of the Wake Forest Baptist Church in North Carolina when they decided to have a commitment ceremony in 1997. Not realizing the wave of protest that would result, the couple planned to have their union ceremony in Wake Forest University's chapel. University officials were quick to stop the planning, provoking a powerful response from community supporters and students alike
