Summary
This report represents progress towards improving our understanding of whether government policies and programs are making a significant difference in improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health; it is too soon, however, to expect that the results against these performance indicators will identify anything new about the state of health of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population. This report reinforces what is already known: that heart disease and stroke, diabetes, respiratory diseases, cancer and injury are the most significant contributors to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ill health and death. In many instances, these deaths and chronic illnesses are potentially preventable. This is clearly demonstrated when comparing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander hospitalisation and death rates with those for the non-Aboriginal and TorresStrait Islander population. A number of jurisdictions have specific programs or projects underway to focus on prevention, early detection and treatment of preventable chronic diseases
