Summary *Coarse language*This documentary is the first in a three-part series examining the life and work of three major Australian artists; comedian Mary Hardy, painter Lloyd Rees and writer, Elizabeth Jolley. The half-hour documentary, IOU: Mary Hardy, celebrates the brilliant but largely forgotten talent who paved the way for female entertainers in this country.Mary Hardy is an unwritten chapter in the history of Australian television. She was the Queen of television and radio in Melbourne in the 1960s and 1970s and won seven Logie awards for the 'Most Popular Female' in Victoria. She was a maverick who redefined women's roles in the medium for decades.Despite her success, Mary had a dark side. Her brother Frank Hardy (author of Power Without Glory) said, "She was the greatest ad-libber and wit, but that wit and that ability to work without scripts was a manic thing and the other side was depression".This program examines her legacy through the eyes of her peers and successors - John Michael Howson, Wendy Harmer, Tania Lacy, Garry Stewart and grand niece, Marieke Hardy. It also features newly discovered archival footage of Mary's early performances.Wendy Harmer, performer, author and presenter of ABC TV's new series Stuff credits Hardy with breaking down the archetypical roles for women on Australian television.John Michael Howson, writer, media commentator and close friend of Hardy remembers falling in 'love' with her the first time they met and reveals that without her encouragement he would never have entered the entertainment business.PRODUCTION DETAILS:Executive producer Megan Harding, series producer Louise Turley, director Robert Hayward, researchers Robert Hayward and Jenny O'Meara
