Notes Sir David Griffin, former Lord Mayor of Sydney (1972-1973) and from 1965 to 1980 Executive Chairman of the aluminium mining company, Nabalco (North Australia Bauxite and Alumina Company). He graduated from Sydney University in 1938 and practiced at the NSW Bar before pursing business interests. Griffin enlisted in the AIF in 1940. He spent three and a half years as a prisoner of war in Changi, after being captured by the Japanese in the fall of Singapore in February 1943. Whilst in Changi, Griffin was a member the Literary Circle, writing a children's book "The Happiness box". It was published after the war, then republished in 1992 for the 50th anniversary of the fall of Singapore. After the war Sir David (knighted in 1974) went back to his old law firm before becoming an Associate to Justice Sir Dudley Williams of the High Court. He worked at the Bar from 1946 to 1949 then took a partnership in an established law firm. Griffin moved into business in a fulltime capacity in 1965, retiring in 1980
