Summary |
In 1825, G.G. Howland and his brother Samuel S. Howland agreed to build the frigate "Liberator" for the Greeks at a cost of $250,000. The firm of Le Roy Bayard & Co. were to build the "Hope", also for $250,000. The cost became almost double the original estimate, and only one ship reached the Greeks. A pamphlet war ensued, and aroused popular indignation against both shipbuilders |
