Summary The dramatic story of Robin, crippled son of a knight, who proves his courage and wins his king's recognition - set against a background of fourteenth-century England. While the plague raged in the city of London, Robin, son of Sir John de Bureford, lay ill in his father's house, crippled by a strange malady. His father had gone off to the wars with the King, his mother was in the Queen's service, and Robin was supposed to be on his way to the castle in the north where he would serve as a page in his first step towards knighthood. Brother Luke who rescued him and took him to the hospice of St. Mark had a hand in Robin's education. So did Brother Matthew, who first taught him how to use wood-carving tools, and John-go-in-the-Wynd, who accompanied Robin and Brother Luke on the long pilgrimage from London through Oxford to the great castle of Lindsay where he eventually learned that there were more ways to serve his king than mounting a horse and riding to battle. âÂÂThe Door in the Wallâ has all the drama and the pageantry of medieval life and yet tells the reader much of the simple ways of the common people of those days. Marguerite de Angeli, wonderful artist and storyteller that she is, and knowing as she does many of the churches, castles and inns which were standing in Robin's day, has achieved in this what many consider to be her finest book. -- Dust jacket
