Summary This manual deals with some aspects of management particularly relevant to heritage property. The conservation and management of heritage places in Australia is based on the nationally accepted Australian ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) Charter for the Conservation of Places of Cultural Significance (known as the Burra Charter). The Charter contains a set of conservation principles and guidelines that form the standard reference for heritage professionals in Australia. This manual outlines approaches to and examples of heritage identification, assessment and conservation that are consistent with the principles of the Burra Charter and current 'best practice' in heritage management. The manual is primarily designed for line-managers in Commonwealth departments, authorities and agencies with responsibiity for managing property. It provides a guide through the various legislative requirements and processes that relate to heritage property, so that the mangers may undertake the tasks themselves or supervise tasks that will be assigned to contractors or consultants
