Summary It is estimated that obesity and obesity-related illnesses could cost the British National Health Service 45 billion pounds (approx 70 AUD billion) a year by 2050 unless the trend is arrested. Obesity in the UK is an epidemic spiralling out of control. The UK is the fattest country in Europe and with over a third of the nation categorised as clinically obese, bulging Britain is now the third fattest nation on earth. Bariatric surgery offers a radical cost-saving and life-changing solution to this problem. In this new documentary series, cameras follow the lives of 12 obesity sufferers from fat to thin as they undergo radical bariatric surgery. In episode 5, Laura (38) has been overweight for as long as she can remember. At her heaviest Laura weighed 197kgs and was walking with two sticks, had an asthma condition and was on a myriad of prescription drugs. Laura's weight spiralled out of control when she was sexually assaulted in her home. Laura has had enough and is about to undergo gastric bypass surgery. She has been committed to a strict regime to prepare for this life-changing procedure. Ron (54) consumes more food than triple that of the average male. He will eat his way through 5000 calories per day and his eating habits have led him to a weight of almost 150kgs. Ron suffers from arthritis in both knees and the weight-related condition sleep apnoea that means he struggles to breathe at night. His food consumption is classed as an addiction, and the psychological effects are much the same as with any addiction, be it food, alcohol or drugs.PRODUCTION DETAILS:Thumbs Up Productions - 6 x 46'
