Summary On Thin Ice is an emotional and awe inspiring human story that reveals just what it takes to conquer the South Pole.Almost 100 years since the fateful Scott and Amundsen race, double Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell and TV presenter Ben Fogle compete in one of the world's greatest contests: the 2009 race to the South Pole. The challenge they face is immense: an 800 km cross country skiing race to the South Pole, on the windiest, coldest, highest and driest continent in the world; winds of almost 160 kmph, constant daylight, temperatures as low as minus 50*C and a steadily increasing altitude up to the equivalent of 4,000m.If that wasn't enough, they must survive each other's company day in and day out, for up to 45 days. And on top of that they have to train their bodies to face the harshest conditions known to man, pull a sled behind them weighing almost 80kg, escape deadly crevasses, stuff their bodies with over 6,000 calories a day and ski for up to 18 hours a day. This five-part series follows the ups and downs, the trials and tribulations, the good times and the bad as Ben, James and a third team member struggle to win.To begin their preparations James and Ben must first recruit this third team member for the challenge of a lifetime.Episode 1Fifteen months before the start of the race to the South Pole, Ben and James begin their training and preparations. After completing The Great North Run in the UK, they then go on to experience extreme cold and wind for the first time, and expose themselves to hyperthermia; in a climatic chamber, they face temperatures as low as minus 80*C over a 24-hour period. The search is also on for a third team-mate. After weeks of deliberation, they recruit Hollywood actor and keen marathon runner Jonny Lee Miller. Together they attend the first training session in Arctic Norway with the other competing teams. Here they start to learn vital yet basic survival skills needed to the constant cold of Antarctica. Facing stiff competition and blizzards is a baptism of fire for the three polar novices, but they pull through. And crucially they start to bond as a team. But will they be able to marry three busy careers with all the training and preparation needed to face the world's coldest, windiest and highest continent?
