Summary |
Due to unusually high rainfall during the monsoon season, in August 2018 the Indian state of Kerala was affected by severe floods. As a result, more than 483 people died, 14 are still missing, and about one million people were evacuated. According to the Kerala government, one-sixth of the total population of Kerala was directly affected by the floods and related incidents. During the time of flooding, there was an acute shortage of feminine hygiene products in the state. Mr. Jinoj, chief executive officer of Wager International, received an emergency call from the Health Minister of Kerala, asking him to ensure that the relief camps had ample supplies of feminine hygiene products. This case describes how the flood in Kerala impacted customer perception and buying behavior towards feminine hygiene products. Women in the flood relief camps suffered from poor facilities, lack of privacy, inadequate supply of feminine hygiene products, and difficulty purchasing these products. Men in the camps realized these difficulties and provided constructive response. The case also explains the aftereffects of the flood in Wager International (P) Ltd. The company identified opportunities in the local market and planned strategies for entry. This case asks students to put themselves in the shoes of the CEO of Wager International. From this vantage, students understand the factors affecting customer buying behavior, stages involved in the customer buying process for feminine hygiene products, and the business-expansion strategies followed by Wager International |
