Summary |
This dataset is used to describe the context, process, analysis, and interpretation of an ethnographic research interview. It was part of the data I collected through my fieldwork in Gujarat, a state of India. It contributed to my PhD at the Institute of Health Research, Lancaster University, UK (2003--2007). My research explored the experiences of women who had experienced sexual violence and registered a complaint of rape with the police. The participants included rape victims, aged 16--45 (a number of participants were not aware of their exact age), their family members, samaj (social group to which they belonged); medico-legal professionals (doctors, nurses, ayahs [support staff in hospitals]); legal professionals: lawyers, judges, public prosecutors (government appointed pleaders), police; civil society professionals (field workers, programme heads, heads of organizations) in urban and rural areas of Gujarat, a state of India. I use the word victim to reflect the repetitive traumas endured by women as a result of their experiences of the systems put in place to respond to their reporting of rape. The dataset files are accompanied by a Teaching Guide and a Student Guide |
