Summary Ethnographic data collection was conducted with emergency responders in two types of physically intensive trainings: swift water rescue and collapsed structure trainings. The 32-hr swift water rescue training included classroom instruction and river rapids on-site training in day and nighttime, and the 50-hr collapsed structure training included classroom instruction and simulated disaster breaking and shoring up concrete to rescue simulated victims. In each case, data collection required physical endurance, strength, and skill (e.g., swimming, river rafting, tool usage). As a participant-observer, the researcher's body is challenged as it is immersed in these types of hazardous, fluctuating organizational environments. Among the research challenges include how to manage physical and research demands simultaneously. Field notes and photography were used to collect data in situ. In addition, in-depth interviews were used before and after the trainings as well as organizational training manuals and after-action reports. Lessons learned focus on how to document ethnographic data in these contexts, which has implications for disciplines like organizational studies and management who study discourse and materiality
