Summary "This biography has been written at the request of the Council of the Law Society of South Australia, primarily with the object of perpetuating the memory of a man who was a learned lawyer and a very distinguished judge. The Right Honourable Sir Samuel James Way, Bart., died on 8th January 1916 in his eightieth year, having been Chief Justice of South Australia for almost forty years and Lieutenant-Governor for over twenty years. In addition, he had for many years been Chancellor of the University of Adelaide, President of the Board of the Public Library, Museum, and Art Gallery, Chairman of the Botanic Garden Board, and President of the Zoological Society, and had been actively associated with almost every movement in South Australia for the improvement of Imperial relations and the strengthening of the ties with the mother country; he was a man who was expected to be chairman of every public meeting held for any purpose, and afterwards to draft the address or the dedication or to make the proper representations." -- preface, page vii
