Summary Conscious that trust deficit is a principal concern in East Asia, the book attempts to suggest ways to enhance confidence in certain key areas such as disputes in East and South China Seas, maritime CBMs, impact of economic interdependence on security, and issues concerning identity and values in Asian thinking. Today's East Asia is experiencing momentous changes in its economic and security profiles, creating a paradox of unprecedented economic dynamism alongside grave politico-security issues that threaten to undermine stability. A case to build confidence in East Asia is more urgent now than ever before. A close scrutiny of issues affecting the region reveals that a lack of trust is a major root cause of instability. In this book, leading scholars suggest ways to enhance confidence in the region by critically analyzing certain key aspects of East Asia's 'trust deficit': disputes in East and South China Seas, maritime CBMs, the impact of economic interdependence on security, and issues concerning identity and values in Asian thinking
"This exciting new book deals with a topic of great and growing importance, both in Asia and beyond. It is also an extraordinarily contentious one. The authors represent a broad spectrum of opinions from around the region, and many are leading experts in the subject. As a reflection of the state of debate in the East Asian region, this is a very useful volume.' - Thomas U. Berger, Frederick S. Pardee School of International Studies, Boston University, USA
