Summary The depth of analysis enabled by interpretative phenomenological analysis requires a level of engagement with the data that is often difficult to achieve in the time available for a student research project. This case describes my experience of conducting interpretative phenomenological analysis research with a fellow student as an undergraduate. By following the four stages that have been suggested for an interpretative phenomenological analysis project (planning the study, collecting data, performing the analysis and writing up the results) this case describes the challenges we encountered at each stage and how our work was organized so that a daunting prospect became a precious and enjoyable learning experience which produced interesting outcomes
