Summary |
Three To Go: Michael shows Michael's life has followed a relatively straight and narrow path. A chance encounter with an actor involved in a film on guerrilla warfare and armed resistance leads him to question himself and the world around him. In this experimental drama, Michael is taken on an excursion into the realm of the young radical, but is it where he belongs? In his directorial debut, acclaimed director Peter Weir interweaves Michael's story with segments from 'Youth Quake', a panel discussion on the youth revolution, and footage from the film showing Sydney under siege.Directed by Peter Weir and starring Grahame Bond ("Aunty Jack"), Michael is the first of the Three to Go films, a trilogy in which three young directors (Peter Weir, Brian Hannant and Oliver Howes) each made a half hour drama on aspects of youth culture and experience. Michael won the Best Film Award at the 1970 Australian Film Institute awards. The second part of this episode, From The Tropics To The Snow is a film about a film about Australia. A scriptwriter and a director argue their approaches to the problem of a comprehensive documentary about Australia: one favours an experimental style, the other a more conventional approach. Excerpts, wittily observed, from both proposed films indicate the faults of each, and the problems of making such a film are chronicled with considerable humour. The making of the film was clouded with some controversy around Stanley Hawes' (then Producer-in-Chief) refusal to allow the young Australian director working at the Unit, Dick Mason, to direct the central drama sequences. The film also features a young Reg Livermore playing a documentary director. The film was very successful with audiences and at festivals and remains a truly memorable film |
