Summary Dr. Dipankar spends his days treating patients at a government hospital, and his nights working on a leprosy vaccine in his home laboratory. Straining both his health and his relationship with his wife, he finally brings his work to fruition. However, his achievements are immediately mired in controversy as his professional peers question the methods of his experiments and subsequent findings. The Department of Health, angry with Dr. Dipankar for having released the news to the press without their approval, too refuses to recognize his research and goes further to transfer him to a village clinic. And when the John Anderson Foundation in Britain invites Dr. Dipankar to submit his papers to them, the Director of Health makes sure that the letter gets lost in a pile of paperwork. Strapped of time, Dr. Dipankar is unable to finish documenting his research and before he is able to do so, news breaks that two American scientists have already found a vaccine for leprosy. This film is based on the life and suicide of Dr. Subhash Mukhopadhyay, the first Indian doctor to create a test tube baby. Awards/Festivals: Second Best Feature Film, Best Director & Special Jury Award for Best Actor, National Film Awards, India; Best Film & Best Director, Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards; Best Screenplay, Film Fare Awards; Red Cross Film Festival, Sofia, Bulgaria
