Summary From the splendour of Versailles to the squalor of a prison cell, this two-part documentary tells the story of Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France. In this episode, we see how Marie Antoinette becomes the most hated woman in France, following the infamous diamond necklace scandal. She was also blamed for France's financial problems and accused of sexual perversion. The King, by contrast, was depicted as weak and impotent. When the French Revolution erupted in 1789, a mob of Parisian women marched to the royal palace shouting for the Queen's blood. Eventually, the Royal family was imprisoned in the Tuileries Palace. In 1791 they tried to flee but were recognised and arrested. Louis XVI was charged with treason and executed in January 1793. Marie Antoinette followed him to the guillotine in October 1793. (From the US, in English and French, English subtitles) (Part 2)
