Summary |
“In the twelfth century, throughout Europe, there was an unprecedented efflorescence of monumental sculpture, brought about by the sudden massive increase in church building. Much of the sculpture produced at the time is well-known - the famous works by Wiligelmo and Antelami at Modena and Parma, the grand portals of Provence (St Gilles du Gard and St Trophime at Arles), the stupendous cloister reliefs of Silos, and the English contributions at, for instance, Canterbury and Lincoln - but there still remains a substantial number of little-known and unpublished sculptures in museums, large and small, in every country in Europe. The catalogue of the Romanesque sculpture in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the first publication to cover the sculpture of the twelfth century in the Museum's collections, contains many previously unpublished pieces from France, Italy, England and Spain.”--Book jacket |
