Summary Catherine Sarah Deakin (1850-1937) was the sister and only sibling of Alfred Deakin (1854-1919). She never married, and lived with her parents at their home in Adams Street, South Yarra. After their deaths, she continued to live in the family home until her own death. Catherine was a qualified teacher and a talented musician who taught private pupils. She also taught her three nieces from home, and chaperoned Stella on a trip to Europe in 1909 where Stella furthered her studies in chemistry. Catherine later accompanied her youngest niece Vera to Europe in 1913, where Vera undertook further training in music. This collection is an accumulation of material gathered from the Adams Street house after Catherine's death. It contains letters, postcards, booklets, programs, photographs and newspaper clippings and also contains material from and about Stella and Vera. Catherine and Stella were very close, and the collection contains a range of material from their trip to Europe and from Stella Deakin Rivett's later married life. The collection also contains items relating to Catherine's brother, Alfred Deakin
