Summary Following on from the national award-winning and critically acclaimed series Once Upon a Time in Cabramatta which aired in 2012, Once Upon A Time in Punchbowl is the untold story of how the Lebanese community overcame the odds and found its place in multicultural Australia. This four-part documentary series hears from community leaders, police, families and individuals, as they combine to tell the compelling and dramatic story of a proud and resilient community, under intense pressure and scrutiny. In the days following the Cronulla Beach riots in December 2005, many young Lebanese Australians are outraged at what they perceive as an attack by wider Australia on their Australian identity, their culture and religion. On the night of the Cronulla riots they attack the beachside suburbs of southern Sydney. The next day when rumours spread of reprisals against the Lakemba Mosque thousands gather to protect the building, among them many people of non-Arabic or Muslim background. During days of continued rioting, Lebanese Australian community leaders work closely with the NSW Government and Police to crack down on the violence. In the next months the Lebanese-Australian community work with the NSW Police and community organization to build bridges across the cultural divide. The year after the Cronulla Riots, Jihad Dib becomes Deputy Principal of Punchbowl Boys' High School, a school once struggling in a suburb known for drug activity. By 2009 Jihad is Principal and the school records some of the fastest growth rates in writing and numeracy in the nation, although real challenges remain. Pride is being restored to the Lebanese Australian community. Today the Lebanese Australian community is a strong and cohesive part of wider Australia. There are still problems as in any community, but Lebanese Australia has a resilience and strength that makes vital contributor to 21st century multicultural Australia.
