The case describes the problems faced by Alibaba (a Chinese e-commerce business) during the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to enforced lockdowns in China, Alibaba saw a severe reduction in profitability of its e-commerce business, which was the main source of revenue for the Alibaba group. Alibaba was forced to reduce its logistics capacity impacting the number of packages the company could deliver and Chinese consumer spending decreased as business were forced to close as curfews and other social distancing measures were enforced.
