Series Gourmet Farmer ; Series 3, Episode 2
Summary When former food critic, Matthew Evans, swapped his city life to have a go at small farm living in Tasmania, he really put to the test his primary belief that people should be directly connected with their food: either by growing it, rearing it, or sourcing it from local producers.Matthew has now moved to his new farm, Fat Pig Farm, and the series follows Matthew, Sadie and little Hedley as they take on the challenge of making their new property work.It has been a year of experimentation and Matthew has kept chooks for eggs, but now he'd like to get heritage chickens for their meat. He is interested in the differences between heritage chickens and free- range chickens purchased from the supermarket and so he sets out to compare their size, colour and especially taste.Matthew is also challenged to have a regular supply of vegetables when his garden is up and running. He is keen to build a poly-tunnel to ensure year round supply and he's heard of an approach to construct a poly-tunnel where chickens have helped fertilise and prepare the soil, a method which greatly interests him.
