Summary This case study presents an overview of how multimodal social semiotic theory was combined with visual means of data collection and analysis. The visual methods used were content analysis and still and animated experiential landscape mapping. These methods and theory were used in a study that considered the impact of increasingly visual means of communication (brought about by changes in digital media) on young children's emerging knowledge of images. Due to the young age of the children in the project, it also highlights child-participative methods
