"In the spring of 1876, when Mr. Blaine seemed the most probable candidate of the Republican party for the Presidency, he was charged in various quarters with having used his political influence while Speaker to induce the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad Company, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad Company, and the Union Pacific Railroad Company to buy from him the bonds of the Little Rock and Fort Smith Railroad Company at a price very largely in excess of their value. These charges took so definite a form that Mr. Blaine felt compelled to meet them by a public denial; and, accordingly, on April 24, 1876, he made a statement in the House of Representatives"--Page 1 |
