Summary DROWNING DANGERThis week on Behind the News we're taking a special look at water safety. As summer gets closer more Australian kids will hit the beach, pool or river for a swim. But in the past year, 271 Australians died in the water. And 35 of them were kids. Two sisters believe swimming lessons would have saved their 9-year old brother from drowning at the beach. So now they're campaigning for the classes to be made compulsory for all school kids.** Drowning Danger will be next week's BtN #AskaReporter topic! **RESUSCITATION CLASSKids are often first on the scene when disaster strikes, especially around the water. But when a life hangs in the balance, what can kids do to help? In the second part of our special look at water safety, we visit a class learning all about resuscitation and discover it could be the most important lesson they ever take.MELBOURNE CUP HISTORYThese days, it's known as the race that stops the nation. But how did the Melbourne Cup start? To find out, we travel back in time to discover how a simple horse race became one of the most significant events on the Australian Sporting calendar.INDIGENOUS ARTThe Art Gallery of South Australia is currently holding a festival of contemporary indigenous art called Tarnanthi. Often, these exhibitions offer an audio tour hosted by the art gallery's director for visitors to enjoy. But instead, this festival invited kids to provide the commentary that goes along with the incredible artworks on display. We joined these kids-turned-art aficionados as they got to hear their recordings broadcast throughout the gallery for the first time.TEACHER RESOURCES INCLUDED Learning areas -The Arts / Visual ArtsExplore ideas and artworks from different cultures and times, including artwork by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, to use as inspiration for their own representations Years 3 and 4Identify intended purposes and meanings of artworks using visual arts terminology to compare artworks, starting with visual artworks in Australia including visual artworks of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Years 3 and 4Explore ideas and practices used by artists, including practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, to represent different views, beliefs and opinions Years 5 and 6Explain how visual arts conventions communicate meaning by comparing artworks from different social, cultural and historical contexts, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artworks Years 5 and 6Experiment with visual arts conventions and techniques, including exploration of techniques used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, to represent a theme, concept or idea in their artwork Years 7 and 8Identify and connect specific features and purposes of visual artworks from contemporary and past times to explore viewpoints and enrich their art-making, starting with Australian artworks including those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Years 7 and 8THE REPTILE SCHOOLLots of school classrooms keep pets.
