Description 1 online resource (68 min.)
Summary In this stark take-down of crooked bureaucracy, Adilkhan Yerzhanov tells the story of two orphaned brothers and their little sister who are evicted from their flat. Homeless, the children camp on family-owned land until they are told it is slated to pass into control of the state unless housing foundations are laid. As the children resourcefully begin to build their own foundation, the laws change. Foundations are not enough. The shell of a new building must be standing. The children refuse to accept the deal and begin a fraught back and forth with an ever-evolving bureaucratic system bent on denying them what is theirs. Adilkhan Yerzhanov courageously defies public condemnation by the prime minister of his homeland for daring to expose impossibility of buying homes in Kazakhastan. In spite of this, he continues to make outspoken films that are met with political opposition and international awards and acclaim
