Summary |
About Women lifts the lid on Australian women's lives, post-feminism. This landmark series is a reflection of our times as women of all ages, backgrounds and circumstances open up about what really matters to them. We meet them at a time of uncertainty for some, a turning point for others and for a lucky few, a time of accomplishment and happiness. Starting with menstruation and the painful uncertainties of youth, moving through the 'productive' years of career and/or parenting, to the postmenopausal twilight years without a rocking chair in sight, About Women makes a powerful contribution to our understanding of what it is to be female in 21st century Australia.Interestingly, for the women in this series, body image, mating and child-bearing may still be their predominant goal.Episode One: Girls, Girls, Girls In this first episode, we are introduced to girls and young women dealing with body image, the onset of menstruation, friendship and finding their place amongst their peers. These are years of tumultuous change and confusion for most young people. Will withdrawn 14-year old Alex, bullied by the bitchy 'queen bees' at school, come out of her shell when she participates in a weekend camp for troubled teens? How will Kaleesha, a young Indigenous woman from a country town, cope with university life in the big city? And why does attractive legal secretary Ellen want a breast enlargement? Each of these young women is on their own journey towards independence, self-improvement and self-knowledge.
