The untouchables have traditionally occupied the lowest place in the caste system of Hindu India. Today it is illegal to discriminate against an untouchable, yet they remain at the bottom of the caste hierarchy, performing the most menial roles in society. More than one in five of India's 700 million Hindus is untouchable, making caste discrimination one of the world's most comprehensive human rights issues today.
