*Adult Themes, Drug Use, Nudity*Australia had fallen in love with the car by the 1970s but this love provoked major conflicts in Australian society: between the inner cities and the suburbs, the drinking drivers versus the police, the local industry versus the international world, the petrol car and the future.The 1970s was a period of great social upheaval - inner-city trendies faced off against suburban gangs, Peter Brock and Allan Moffat intensified the rivalry between Holden and Ford, and car lovers battled to stay alive on the roads because of a volatile cocktail of speed, youth and alcohol.Drivers didn't like it when petrol rationing was introduced into Australia but there was no fear of the petrol bowsers running dry at Mt Panorama in Bathurst; the only thing the spectators were limited to was one slab of beer each day.There was a very dark side to the car in the mid-1970s. Up to 3,500 people were being killed annually and Australia researchers were the first in the world to prove the link to alcohol consumption. Right now the car doesn't hold such a hallowed place in society. The car industry has shrunk despite the unions and the bosses uniting against a government intent on making it more competitive. The old rivalry between Ford and Holden died with Brockie. The congestion on city roads and the price of petrol means that people feel imprisoned by their cars.
