This documentary goes behind the scenes at NASA to discover how it is preparing for its most ambitious and daring mission yet: to send people to Mars. It's over 40 years since Neil Armstrong made the first human footprint on the moon. But getting to the red planet would involve a journey of at least three years.Meet the scientists and engineers working out how to overcome the problems associated with sending humans 56 million kilometres from earth. It will be a tough journey. A rocket must be able carry enough fuel and supplies to feed the astronauts for years. It must be able to survive harmful radiation from the sun, and other sources like galactic cosmic rays.The astronauts will have to deal with extreme levels of boredom and prolonged weightlessness. Much of the technology needed doesn't even exist yet, and the astronauts who will eventually make the journey are probably still at school.Scientists and engineers are designing new rockets, new space suits and finding ways to help these future astronauts survive the perils of this long voyage.
